12.The dog has always been considered man’s best friend. Always noted for being particularly faithful in watching over children, he also has his place by the fireside, in the cow pasture, on the sheep range(放牧区), and beside the hunter in forest. He is easy to train, works hard, and often performs astonishing feats. And in the frozen polar regions he was once the principal motive power, before being lately displaced by the plane and helicopter. Because he howls or whines in the presence of impending death, the dog was once thought to have supernatural powers and believed to be capable of seeing gods and ghosts invisible to men. Actually, the basis for these beliefs lies in the hound’s sensibility to people’s feelings and his superior hearing ability and sense of smell, which enable him to detect signs hidden from human observation. His record of saving lives is outstanding, for he often gives warning of fire and other dangers not noticed by his master. The dog’s major contribution, however, has been to medical research. Both his diet and his structure are comparable to those of the human being, and so he has been the subject of countless demonstrations and experiments. Open heart surgery has been made possible largely because of the dog. But his sacrifice has repaid his own species as well by safeguarding it from rabies(狂犬病), distemper, and other diseases. In the polar regions, the dog mainly

19.Nothing says “Happy Birthday!” like having a coin released in your honor by the United States Mint(铸币局),and 2009 has become an especially festive year as the Mint rolled out nine different coins in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday.Four pennies with new designs on the reverse side were issued stsrting February 12. The image of a cabin represents his birthplace. Because Lincoln’s family was poor, and no one could have predicted his later importance, the actual cabin is long gone. Therefore the design is based on the “symbolic cabin” displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site in Kentucky. The other designs show Abraban taking a break to read a book, the young lawyer lincoln in front of the Illinois state capitol and a Lincoln-free image of the half finished U.S.Capitol dome as it looked during his time in office. These four coins-produced with today’s standard mix of 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper-are intended for genernal circulation. The Mint also relwased five collectible coins that sell for more than their face value . Specialeditions of the four penny designs were produced with the metal content used in 1909:a mix of 95 percent copper and 5 percent tin and zinc . In addition, I the world of “bigger” money,2009has brought the Lincoln Commemorative One-Dollar Coin-made up of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper-with an image that has a Gettysburg Address theme. The one-dollar coin has a design of______on it.

Passage Three
As a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct acts of buying and selling. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding the cheapest market for the wings they wish to purchase. (83) Specialization is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product.
Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal. (84) The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties ’ desires and preferences.
Thirdly, money acts as store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a product could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on end would involve 20 obvious disadvantages. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided. If one had to save products instead of money, __________.
单选题A. this would need years of practice ~||~coal, for example, would lose its value~||~ they could not be stored for years on end ~||~ many products would lose their value
