4.Years ago, a cigarette commercial asked if you were smoking more, but enjoying it less. That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn't work, we get the problem. In our extremely hurried search for satisfaction, we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach. The truth is simple; so simple it is hard to believe.Satisfaction lies with less, not with more.Yet, we pursue the myth that this thing, or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek. Arthur Lindman, in his very effective book, "The Harried Leisure Class," described the uselessness of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time.He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But, ironically, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them.Carried to an extreme, he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago, and his prediction seems more accurate every year. Lindman of course, is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago.It is better, he wrote, to have less, but enjoy it more. If you would like to enjoy life more, I challenge you to experiment with me.How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on? The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up, the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you.You must try it for yourself.[单选题] Arthur Lindman wrote __.

9.Passage FiveExercise, everyone advises[ But immediately, when you try, you run into trouble. There is so much contradictory, sometimes in correct advice about exercising that become confused.Test yourself on the following true-false quiz. It tell you what you need to know.1. To lose weight yon should always "work up a good sweat"when exercising. False. Sweating only lowers body temperature to prevent overheating; it does not help you reduce weight. You may weigh less immediately after a workout, but this is due to water loss. Once you replace the liquid, you replace the weight.2. You burn more calories jogging one mile than walking the same distance. False. You use, the same amount of energy whether you walk or jog the mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed doesn't matter. Of course, if you jog rather than walk for 30 minutes, you'll cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories.3. If your breathing doesn't return to normal within minutes after you finish exercising, you've exercised too much.True. Five minutes or so after exercising, your breathing should be normal, your heart shouldn't pounding, and you shouldn't exhausted. Beneficial exercise is not too difficult, unpleasant, and exhausting; it is enjoyable and refreshing.4. Walking is one of the best exercises.True. Walking helps circulation of blood throughout the body, and thus has a direct effect on your overall feeling of health. The underlined phrase "work up" in Quiz 1 means__________.

11.Passage FiveAs we recently discovered, there is a Stepmother’s Day,though it is not on any official holiday calendar. So,it would be safe to assume that there is a similar day for stepdads, too.Right? Well,it depends on what you read.A Google search brought up posts that say,for example,“It’s on father’s day--father’s day is for fathers, step—fathers and people who are like fathers to you-it’s a day for making father figures feel special.”Further searching found a Stepfather’s Day Facebook page that says,“The unofficial Stepfather’s Day is the fourth Sunday of June.”Unfortunately,as of the publishing of this article, only 30 people have “liked” the page.Considering that studies show 3.3 million men,or 11.1%of U.S.fathers,live with at least one stepchild, that’s only a drop in the ocean. It’s interesting to note that there is a National Grandparents’ Day.President Jimmy Carter signed it into law in 1978.Law! While grandparents are undoubtedly special people in our children’s lives, they are often seen as the most loving family members. But what about the stepparents? The stepparents are the ones who are often the outsiders, the ones who have to endure the hurtful “You’re not my dad!” or “You’re not my mom!” And yet they never give up.They do their best to overcome the inherent challenges of stepparents and be role models for their stepchildren. These unsung(未被颂扬的)family heroes deserve “official” days of honor.Perhaps if we are loud enough,President Obama, who had a stepfather himself, will sign into law National Stepmother’s Day and National Stepfather’s Day.Are you with me? Follow me and get your voice heard. How cool it would be if we could make this happen! What does the underlined word“that’’in Paragraph 1 refer to?

12.

Passage Four

Sporting activities are essentially modified forms of hunting behavior. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and

his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter’s triumph of killing his prey.

To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look back at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving( 进化 ) as Cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting fielD、(84)Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed :They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey killers. They cooperated as skillful male group attack.

Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting the food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life was put to a new use --that of controlling and domesticating ( 驯养 ) their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for survival.

(85)The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets. Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting sequences( 后果 ), but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that was no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten, but there were other purposes, much simpler of obtaining a meaty meal. What is the main idea of the passage?

18.Passage ThreeIf women are mercilessly exploited (剥削) year after year, they are only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of beihg seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe (衣柜) packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened;necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes. When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashion of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be treated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stabililty and feasibility? That's for you to decide. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
