Passage One

A man once said how useless it was to put advertisements in the newspapers.

Last week, he said, my umbrella was stolen from a London church. As it was a present, I spent twice its worth in advertising, but didn t get it back.

How did you write your advertisement? asked one of the listeners, a merchant.

Here it is, said the man, taking out of his pocket a slip cut from a newspaper, The other man took it and read,

Lost from the City Church last Sunday evening, a black silk umbrella. The gentleman who finds it will receive ten shillings on leaving it at No. 10 Broad Street.

Now, said the merchant, ―Ioften advertise, and find that it pays me well. But the way in which an advertisement is expressed is of extreme importance. Let us try for your umbrella again, and if it fails, I ll buy you a new one. The merchant then took a slip of paper out of his pocket and wrote:

If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the City Church last Sunday evening does nt wish to get into trouble, he will return the umbrella to No.10 Broad Street. He is well known. This appeared in the paper, and on the following morning, the man was astonished when the opened the front door. (81) In the doorway lay at least twelve umbrellas of all sizes and colors that had been thrown in, and his own was among the number. Passage Two

Women are on the whole more verbal than men. They are good at 1anguage and verbal reasoning. while men tend to be skilled at tasks demanding visual-spatial(

视空 )abilities. In fact, along with aggression these are the most commonly accepted difference between these sexes.

Words are tools for communicating with other people especially information about people. They are mainly social tools. Visual and spatial abilities are good for imagining and manipulating objects and for communicating information about them. Are these talents programmed into the brain? In some of the newest and most controversial research in neurophysiology( 神经生理学 ), it has been suggested that when it comes to the brain males are specialists while women are generalists.

But one knows that, if anything this means in terms of the abilities of the two sexes. Engineering is both Visual and spatial and it ’s true that there are relatively few women engineers. But women become just as skilled

as men at shooting a rifle or driving a car task that involve visual-spatial skills. They also do equally well at programming a computer, which is neither visual nor spatial. Women do, however, seem less likely to fall in love with the objects themselves. We all know men for whom machines seem to be extensions of their identity.

(82)A woman is more likely to see her car, rifle or computer as a useful tool but not in itself fascinating. All the following tasks involve visual-spatial abilities EXCEPT____.

A. imagining and handling objects.~||~providing a computer with a set of instructions~||~shooting a gun and driving an automobile ~||~planning and making things as an engineer does

6.Passage FiveAs we recently discovered, there is a Stepmother’s Day,though it is not on any official holiday calendar. So,it would be safe to assume that there is a similar day for stepdads, too.Right? Well,it depends on what you read.A Google search brought up posts that say,for example,“It’s on father’s day--father’s day is for fathers, step—fathers and people who are like fathers to you-it’s a day for making father figures feel special.”Further searching found a Stepfather’s Day Facebook page that says,“The unofficial Stepfather’s Day is the fourth Sunday of June.”Unfortunately,as of the publishing of this article, only 30 people have “liked” the page.Considering that studies show 3.3 million men,or 11.1%of U.S.fathers,live with at least one stepchild, that’s only a drop in the ocean. It’s interesting to note that there is a National Grandparents’ Day.President Jimmy Carter signed it into law in 1978.Law! While grandparents are undoubtedly special people in our children’s lives, they are often seen as the most loving family members. But what about the stepparents? The stepparents are the ones who are often the outsiders, the ones who have to endure the hurtful “You’re not my dad!” or “You’re not my mom!” And yet they never give up.They do their best to overcome the inherent challenges of stepparents and be role models for their stepchildren. These unsung(未被颂扬的)family heroes deserve “official” days of honor.Perhaps if we are loud enough,President Obama, who had a stepfather himself, will sign into law National Stepmother’s Day and National Stepfather’s Day.Are you with me? Follow me and get your voice heard. How cool it would be if we could make this happen! What does the underlined word“that’’in Paragraph 1 refer to?

7.Passage Two Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is essential to one's life. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didn't have breakfast increased by 33%from 88 million to 117 million--according to the Chicago-based Market Research Corporation of AmericA、For those who dislike eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years have shown that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. "Going without breakfast does not affect work,"said Arnold E.Bender, former professor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, "nor does giving people breakfast improve work. " Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better work is surprisingly inadequate(不充分) ,and most of the recent work involves children, not adults. "The literature," says one researcher, Dr. Earnest Polite at the University of Texas, "is poor."Which of these is mentioned in the second paragraph?

14.根据以下资料,回答42-45题。 England is not a big country: from north to south and from east to west it is only about three hundred miles across. But for a small country it has a surprising range of climate.People who have never visited England or who have visited only one part of it often makes the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and wet country.Except for the summer months of June to September, this is probably true of the north of England and the Midlands. In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that when people retire from the job in the north, they often prefer to move down to the south. Perhaps the warmest part of the country is the southwest, which consists of (is made up of) the counties of Devon and Cornwall, where palm trees, bamboo and many semitropical plants grow well.Flowers and vegetables ripen as much as a month earlier than those elsewhere.Farmers in the areas gain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the southwest is one of England's most popular holiday areas.43 According to the passage, __.

16.If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year.A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), concluded from other men's work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year.It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer. Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking![单选题] It seems that the cold winter __.

18.Passage OneDebate is a valuable way to practise communicating. It can also bring long-lasting rewards, especially for people working with Western businesses. The main activity of debate is presenting one' s opinion and suppmting it with evidence, such as statistics or facts. It is a way of persuasive communication.Charles Lebeau helped create the "Discover Debate" method. He says debate is important to understanding how people communicate in Western business. Successful debaters learn how to give their opinkm, reasans and support. "What we are trying to do is to develop a kind of thinking or approach to discussion and how to interact (交流) with someone else' s opinion, rather than brush their opinion aside. "Debate skills are also important in selling a product, he says. In that situation, the judges are the customem. "So on Monday, for example, one company may come in and present their caseto the customer and they" ll make as strong a ease as they can. On Tuesday, the next day, another company will come in and present their ease to the customer. Usually the party that can present the strongest case wins”Debate also strengthens critical thinking. In other words, it helps students learn to ask questionsand try to understand someone' s reasons and evidence.lift-. Lebeau points out that successful debaters learn to listen carefully to what other people are saying. Then, they look for the weak points in someone else' s opinion or argument. He says debate teaches a systematic way of questioning.

Successful debaters also learn to think from someone else' s point of view. Mr. Lebeau says debate can help broaden the mind. "There' s an expression in English : don' t criticize another person before you have walked in their shoes. I think the wonderful thing about debate is, it puts us in another person' s shoes. "37.Why is debate important.
