2.Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Are you afraid to ask someone for a date? Many people are afraid to assert themselves(坚持己见).Dr.Robert Alberti, author of Stand Up,Speak Out,and Talk Back, thinks it’s because of their lack of confidence.“Our structure oforganization tends to make people distrust themselves.”says Alberti.“There’s alwaysa‘superior’around-a parent,a teacher,a boss-who‘knows better’.These‘superiors’often gain whenthey keep breaking at your self-image.”But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help people assert themselves. They offer“assertiveness training”courses-AT for short. In the AT course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so.They learn to be aggressive without hurting people. In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear.A group taking an AT course will help the shy person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive-the need to share. The shy person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels.Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-image.If someone you face is more“important”than you,you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your own good sense. You go by the other person’ s label. But,why should you?AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do,you can learn to speak out.According to Dr.Alberti, our organization is constructed to____.

10.If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year.A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), concluded from other men's work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year.It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer. Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking![单选题] Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have __.

Passage Two
This story began about 10 years ago. I was coming out of a very bad marriage. For seven long years my husband spent his every waking moment telling me just what was wrong with me. When I finally asked for a divorce, he answered by telling me that I would never find anyone to love me because I was just so unattractive. This went on for about two years. One night one of my friends convinced me to go out with her. We went to a nightclub and that ’s when I met him.
Clint was playing a game with a girl. I sat in the corner watching him. I did n’t feel that I had whatever it took to get up and mix with others because of my self-esteem problem. Finally I got up the courage to order a drink for him. When he got it, he gave me the most dazzling smile. We spent the rest of the evening talking until I realized that it was almost morning. I figured that he was simply being nice to me because I had brought him a drink, but the next day he called and told me that he could not stopping thinking about me and that he wanted to meet my kids too.
(81) About 3 months later, my divorce was final and Clint sat my boys down and asked them if it was all right with them if he asked me to marry him because he could not imagine life without the three of us anymore. I was so touched that he went to my boys and asked for their approval because they were the ―men of the house ‖ at the ripe old ages of 2 and 4. They said yes and we have all been together even since. Clint gave me and my boys a second chance at a wonderful life. (82) Not a day goes by that he doesn ’t tell we are the best thing that ever has happened to him and that he loves us.

16.Can animals be made to work for us? Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings. They point out that at a circus, for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things.Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film.If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them. Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modem times have used geese to give warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes near. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russia, for example, pigeons which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others, it touches a steel plate with its beak. This turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeon to do this and one pigeon can inspect 3 000 to 4 000 balls an hour. Apes have been used in America in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that these large monkeys may be one day gather crops and even drive trains.[单选题] Many animals may be trained to do simple jobs if they know __.

17.Passage OneDebate is a valuable way to practise communicating. It can also bring long-lasting rewards, especially for people working with Western businesses. The main activity of debate is presenting one' s opinion and suppmting it with evidence, such as statistics or facts. It is a way of persuasive communication.Charles Lebeau helped create the "Discover Debate" method. He says debate is important to understanding how people communicate in Western business. Successful debaters learn how to give their opinkm, reasans and support. "What we are trying to do is to develop a kind of thinking or approach to discussion and how to interact (交流) with someone else' s opinion, rather than brush their opinion aside. "Debate skills are also important in selling a product, he says. In that situation, the judges are the customem. "So on Monday, for example, one company may come in and present their caseto the customer and they" ll make as strong a ease as they can. On Tuesday, the next day, another company will come in and present their ease to the customer. Usually the party that can present the strongest case wins”Debate also strengthens critical thinking. In other words, it helps students learn to ask questionsand try to understand someone' s reasons and evidence.lift-. Lebeau points out that successful debaters learn to listen carefully to what other people are saying. Then, they look for the weak points in someone else' s opinion or argument. He says debate teaches a systematic way of questioning.
Successful debaters also learn to think from someone else' s point of view. Mr. Lebeau says debate can help broaden the mind. "There' s an expression in English : don' t criticize another person before you have walked in their shoes. I think the wonderful thing about debate is, it puts us in another person' s shoes. "37.Why is debate important.
