1.The sentence was___(wrong)translated.

填空题

2.Years ago, a cigarette commercial asked if you were smoking more, but enjoying it less. That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn't work, we get the problem. In our extremely hurried search for satisfaction, we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach. The truth is simple; so simple it is hard to believe.Satisfaction lies with less, not with more.Yet, we pursue the myth that this thing, or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek. Arthur Lindman, in his very effective book, "The Harried Leisure Class," described the uselessness of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time.He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But, ironically, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them.Carried to an extreme, he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago, and his prediction seems more accurate every year. Lindman of course, is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago.It is better, he wrote, to have less, but enjoy it more. If you would like to enjoy life more, I challenge you to experiment with me.How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on? The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up, the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you.You must try it for yourself.[单选题] The best title for the passage is __.

3.

Passage Three

As a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct acts of buying and selling. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding the cheapest market for the wings they wish to purchase. (83) Specialization is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product.

Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal. (84) The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties desires and preferences.

Thirdly, money acts as store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a product could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on end would involve 20 obvious disadvantages. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided.Using money as a medium of exchange means that_____.

6.If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research result of ProfessorFaulkner, who says that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and as a result, we areageing unnecessarily soon.Professor Faulkner wanted to find out why healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losingtheir ability to think and to reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could beslowed down.He set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and occupations.Computer technology enabled him to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front andside sections of the brain, which relate to intelligence and emotion, and determine the humancharacter.Contraction of front and side parts—as cells die off—was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty?and seventy?year?olds.Faulkner concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to slow the contraction—using thehead. The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in thetowns. Those least at risk, says Faulkner, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors.White?collar workers doing routine work are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farmworker, bus driver and shop assistant.Faulkner’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulateproperly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need.“The best way to maintaingood blood circulation is through using the brain,”he says.“Think hard and engage inconversation.Don’t rely on pocket calculators.”According to the passage, which group of people seem to age slower than the others?

14.The strange close understanding between twins is a familiar enough phenomenon. Often they seem to understand each other and share each other’s emotions to such an extent that one suspects some kind of thought communication. What is not so widely known is that this special relationship often acts as brake on twins’ intellectual development. As they are partly isolated in their own private world, twins communicate less with adults than do other children. The verbal ability of a four-year old twin is typically six months behind that of a non-twin. The problem can be particularly severe in an underprivileged family, a one parent family for example, where there is little stimulation for children anyway. Such children, while capable of mutual comprehension in a private language, often remain incomprehensible to outsiders and thus at a severe educational disadvantage. The only solution to the problem, cruel though it may seem, is to separate the twins thus forcing them to acquire ordinary speech helped and guided by sympathetic parents and teachers. The author probably feels that twins’ problem
